Songs...
We have been hearing songs come from our childrens mouths these last two days. It is wonderful. For the past 10 days or so our house has been full of sick germies and not-so-feeling-well kids. Today Ben and Hannah were singing and dancing around the house. We got out and went to the zoo. It was glorious to be out of the house!

Noodles...
We went to the store the other day and bought some alphabet noodles. The kids had fun picking letters out and making their names and other words. They giggled and laughed and 'borrowed' noodles from each other. They even had 2nd and 3rd helpings of them.

Friday hike...
We went on a hike a few days before everyone got so sick. The weather was cool and the kids were in a good mood. On our way there, Noah fell asleep but was refreshed as he woke, for the hike. We passed (rather were passed) by lots of runners, walkers and bike riders and we were the only little family of hikers. The hike was in an area where lots of people go for their lunch run or go to get their daily exercise in...so not many kids.
We enjoyed our time together, we rested when someone wanted a rest (every 5 minutes or so) and snacked when we wanted to snack. Waited for the 'slackers' and raced each other to the designated spot. We found lots of giant sycamore trees around each bend in the trail and revelled in their massiveness from the kids' eye-view. The hike was perfect in how long we were gone and in distance. We weren't in it for a long haul that day, but it was a shorter hike that we all enjoyed and would probably do again (after doing all the other hikes in San Diego).

Quiet times...
It has been quiet in our Monkey Family blog this month. We have been battling one illness after the next in our house and it isn't fun. One child is OK and the other two are sick with fevers and diarrhea, then they get better (one faster than the other) then Daddy and the other child gets sick. Then it seems to cycle through again. No fun. Today we have Daddy feeling yucky, Hannah with a fever (since Thursday) and Ben who was throwing up last night. Mommy hasn't caught it...yet. Crossing fingers that she never does!!

To the top!
We went on a hike heading towards the top of Cowles Mountain. We didn't make it to the top today though. We were ready for anything and that came in the form of Noah not wanting to be in the Ergo carrier today. He was very unhappy after only a few minutes of walking. Ben and Hannah were very excited about going to the top of a mountain though. Ben especially wanted to continue going after our quick break. Noah would have nothing to do with the carrier. Corey took him back down the mountain, along with Hannah, while Ben and I continued up the mountain for a bit. We kept turning around to try and find our car on the street. Ben was such a good hiker today.
After a bit more of uphill we turned around and headed back down. We met up with them close to the bottom. It was lunch-time and the kids were getting tired and hungry, so we left! We'll be back another day, to get to the top.

Noah loves....
Noah loves to get on his new Pooh bear ride-on airplane, he favorite is going backwards but is getting real good at going forwards too.
Noah loves to help put Ben's Legos away. He grabs a handful and throws them into the bucket, then takes the bucket and dumps it out to pick them up all over again.
Noah loves to kick his Dora ball in the front of the house, not on the grass but on the sidewalk and into the street. He loves to watch us go and get it out of the street over and over again.
Noah loves rubber ducks. When he sits on the potty he asks for his ducks and then has me line them all up on the side of the sink to watch him. He has to hold the smallest one though, it fits perfectly in the palm of his hand.
Noah loves to hang on my leg while I make breakfast, lunch or dinner, but the best time to do this is when we are rushing to get out of the house. He won't have it any other way.
Noah loves to dance. He stomps his leg and turns in a circle with a big smile on his face as he goes round and round.
Noah loves to play hide-and-seek with Ben and Hannah. He will wait for them to hide and then run around the house or back yard looking for them. When he finds them, he howls with laughter.
Noah loves to help unload the dishwasher. He pulls the plates out and hands them to us one by one. Then the silverware and then the cups. He stands on the door for that though because he is so short and it is just the right size boost for him.
Noah loves to brush his teeth. He (almost) can't walk past the bathroom door without stopping to try to get on the stool and demand for his toothbrush.
Noah loves to read books. His favorites are about trucks and animals and even a little girl named Cathy who is having a birthday party.
Noah loves his giraffe and llama. He holds one in the right hand and the other in the left. He takes them everywhere. They cheer him up when he is sad. It makes him sad when they fall to the floor of the car and I can't pick them up until I stop.
Noah loves hammers. He loves to pound them on the ground, the couch, furniture and even us. We don't like it so much but he thinks it is super funny.
Noah loves his Daddy. He calls for "Da" every morning when he wakes up. He cries when "Da" leaves for work. And he runs (squealing with joy) to the car when "Da" gets home.

Psst...
We went to the dentist yesterday morning. The kids, for their check-ups, and I, for my crown. Ben and I were called in around the same time. They got him all settled in the chair and in the room and then took me to mine, right next door. He did wonderful, every once in a while I'd hear the hygienist say something in a sing-songy voice back to Ben but no yelps or screams. So all was good.
While I was waiting for my mouth to get numb (not so exciting) Hannah popped in to see me. She made her way all the way back to my room all by herself to see me. She was a little nervous but I kept trying to get her to come closer. All that was different about me that she could see was that bib they put on me. Everything else was normal...oh and I was lying down in that chair. Still she was hesitant but OK. Then the hygienist (who was working on Ben) was ready for her. She glanced over at me and said "I want you to come with me!" tears welling in her big bluish-green eyes. She didn't want to go by herself so they went to get Daddy. She was fine.
They started to work on me as I watched TV on the ceiling. When all of a sudden...
"Psst"
The dentist and hygienist look at each other then towards the door. I turn the volume down because I could feel something happening.
"Psst...Hannah is ready"
It was Ben calling the dentist in to finish examining Hannah so they could leave and have lunch. The office does have a very high tech system with intercoms and buttons, but Ben thought it best to bypass all of that with a little "Psst" to get his attention. Everyone in the office got a good giggle.

Potty talk...
It's official, Ben and Hannah get the roll-on-the-ground-giggles when they talk about poop, gas, burps and pee. It's a phase that has hit them both at the same time. They roll with laugther and have even begun to talk in "code" about it. I don't really like them talking about poop, farts and the like at the dinner table so they've decided to go with the code. Now they talk about "apple juice" and "fish oil" and drop to their knees in hysterics.
Today we were at the park and we ran into my cousin (hi Claud!) with two of her sons. Ben and Levi are a month apart, they ran off to the swings and really went wild swinging really high. We could hear them talking to (shouting at?) each other, and everyone else around, about gas. And they were laughing about it together. It seems that it is something that they just find funny, nothing that is taught, because I sure didn't teach them these hysterics! I sure wish my kids didn't do this...but a phase is a phase that shouldn't last too long, right? But...I'm so glad that it isn't *just* my kids!

New Year...
What a beautiful day for our first hike of the year! We went to Mission Trails today and went on a short New Year's Day hike with the kids, a yearly tradition. The trails were packed with kids, their parents, grandparents, pets, and friends toting backpacks, hiking sticks, bandanas, hats, cameras or bottles of water. We were all out and enjoying the sunshine and a bit of the outdoors together yet separate. We stopped at one point since the kids were asking to "sit down and take a break" (even though we hadn't gone very far at all) and there were huge brown fallen sycamore leaves all around us. We gathered them together into piles and the kids grabbed big bunches of them throwing them into the air above us. Others in other places far from here would have done this in September, but in San Diego we do it in January. It was so fun to throw them up and then gather more to do it again and again.
The kids explored the warm sand on the ground and scaled the boulders. We spied lots of mistletoe in the trees above us (did you know that it is a parasite to the tree?) and beautiful river rocks on the ground under the crunchy leaves. Ben started to collect and the carry a bunch of rocks that he intended to take with us back home. We have plenty of rocks at home and so we let him chose a few to bring home and leave the rest there for others to enjoy. Here are some pics of our adventure today.
